If you're looking for a unique adventure off-the-beaten-path and away from the maddening crowd, Mr Kenneth Smith is your man! What Ken doesn’t know about Africa is not worth knowing! Not only have we returned home with a passion for Africa, we have also come home with new friend. Cheers Ken and see you soon.

This was our third ulendo with Barefoot Safaris, our second to Zambia, and we enjoyed the same attention to detail as our other trips, to Malawi and Namibia.  Despite mechanical problems, Barefoot managed the safari superbly, and the country, its people, flora and fauna were introduced to us in the most professional way that we have come to expect from Barefoot.  As we have begun making enquiries about our next journey to the wonderful continent of Africa, through Barefoot, of course, I can highly recommend them; you will not be disappointed”.

What people say about us:

Barefoot Safaris, I've done a few and every one has been an adventure for me. It's mainly the wildlife that holds my fascination but there is much more to take in, the history and culture and the sheer vastness.

I was amazed at the remoteness of the Central Kalahari , if you are looking to get back to nature that's the place to go, and the sands of Namibia take your breath away. For wildlife the Zambian and Tanzanian trips are superb and if you want an experience like no other the journey northwards on Lake Tanganyika to Kigomo followed by Chimp Trekking at Gombe followed by the train journey to Dodoma , well all I can say is you have to experience it to believe it!

I am doing my 5th and 6th trip with Barefoot Safaris this year so I think I can safely say that I recommend them!

“Sitting around the Kafue camp fire in the darkness of early evening, Barefoot is cooking our dinner with a good Scottish malt in hand. We notice the firelight sparkle in the eyes of a Hyena stood not more than 20 feet away, we watch each other for a short time before the Hyena moves off. That precious moment lasts a life time in our memories”.

“The joy of Ken’s company and tours is not just in the big picture, but in the little details: the surprise in finding a weird and fascinating insect, the quiet moments nursing a warm beer on a termite mound at sundown, the understanding that Africa is more than just the Big 5”.

"If you want to experience Africa in its most authentic guise, then you are best advised to uproot and relocate!  However, this is not terribly convenient for the modern traveller and thus Barefoot Safaris is the best way of getting up close and personal with Africa, her sights, sounds, smells and sensations in a relatively short space of time. Ken and his crew are well versed in dealing with all types of travellers and have the knowledge, experience and expertise to make your trip as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible"

"I once dreamt of the perfect African Adventure, travelling by Land Rover in a small self-sufficient group, we would have our tents in the back and camp along the way.

Our days would be spent soaking up the atmosphere of local life pausing in villages and sometimes travelling by local transport the highlight of which would be the ferry up Lake Tanganyika.

When in the bush we would spend time both in the vehicle and on foot tracking game, hardly daring to breathe whilst watching Lions only feet away or as Chimps dashed past us on their way to who knows where.

Evenings would be spent around the campfire with a cold beer in hand. At night we would eventually climb into our sleeping bags and be slowly lulled to sleep by the nightly bush opera

Friendships that would last a lifetime would be made and before we left we would be planning the next trip.

With Barefoot Safaris I was able to live that dream and more."

“For anyone wanting to experience the as 'real' as opposed to the 'tourist' Africa, Barefoot Safaris are a must.”

I travelled one week in Malawi with Ken. I agree with the previous reviews. Ken is a passionate, practical, knowledgeable, cheerful, in short, superb guide. If you are keen to know, you will be rewarded.  Back home, my friend asked me if it wasn't dangerous. Then I realized that I never felt any danger or threat during my trip. True, Malawi is a safe place to travel. But also because Ken told me everything about how to behave in the nature and among the people, I never felt unsafe and could enjoy my time. It should have been different if I was travelling on my own.

Real passion has a name, Kenneth ”Barefoot” Smith.

His passion and love for Africa, its people, animals and plants has affected us more than we could imagine on forehand.

Looking for an adventuress place to get married and having our honeymoon we ended up with Kenneth in Zambia. The personal touch provided to this event has been heart-warming for us. As so did the whole trip. Having a Landrover 4x4 as a bridal car on one day and being on the road with it the next day is a story worth telling our future grand children. Kenneth provided us with many a wonder from plant seeds which could be use for colouring (and “other” useful purposes); to the beauty of seeing an animal behaviour you possible not would have noticed without having been educated to see. And education is what we got. Mostly far away, from where the regular tourist travels, did we our basic training in walking safari, game drive, night drive and learning about the history and the way of life in Africa. Our travels brought us to Chimfunshi chimpanzee’s sanctuary where we learned about the fantastic work of rescuing these wonderful annimals. Being in the Bengwelua swaps and seeing the Shoebill stork and all these other wonderful birds was also very special. Getting up early in Kasanka Park for seeing the Sitatunga antelope walk over the grassy floods. It’s all part off the Barefoot experience. Thereby establishing the love for Africa into our hearts and making it the best holiday experience possible. We thank Barefoot for getting us through primary school. We’ll return for secondary school next year.
